Water Heater Leaking or No Hot Water?

If your water heater is leaking

1. Turn off the power: switch off the breaker for an electric heater, or turn the gas control to OFF or PILOT on a gas heater.
2. Close the cold-water supply valve on the pipe going into the top of the tank.
3. Keep people and pets away from the hot water; tank water can scald.
4. Move boxes and anything valuable away from the tank and mop up what you can.
5. Note the age on the label (often coded in the serial number) and the brand; the plumber will ask.

• No hot water, or hot water that runs out fast
• Rusty or discolored hot water
• Rumbling, popping or banging from the tank
• Pilot light that won't stay lit, or an error code on a tankless unit
• The tank is 10 or more years old
